Cardew Family History |
My search began when my cousin asked if I had ever considered finding out why my father had been called Sidney 'Small' Cardew. Her mother had also had this middle name and she wondered if it could have meant something a bit special. Jokingly she said that we might even be entitled to some vast legacy that someone called 'Small' had left us. I told her about my mate Ken Dowding, who was already doing a genealogy check and would know what the procedure was in carrying out this sort of investigation. This was the start of a long search through the B, D & M records at Ilford Library and the London Records Office. Eventually I had compiled a complete record of all Cardews going back to the start of those records. The middle name 'Small' had been included in most of my specific branch of my family tree, going back to Henry Small CARDEW 1807 - 1853. During my investigations I had joined a couple of family history societies and a contact had advised me that the practice of adopting a wife's maiden name as a middle name was common, especially in the West country, where my roots had been traced to. Try as I might, I could find no trace of 'Small' being a family member. If anyone has any information on a Cardew / Small connection, please contact me via my e-mail link.
